always have been told to use double quotes for, well, quotes. at some point, i read a piece by someone on how they prefer to use single quotes for writing. it 'makes it more subtle' versus the american "double quote." it feels more 'humble' and less demanding of me.

it's stuck with me and i've been practicing using it in my writing.
